STV launches City Sites for Edinburgh and Glasgow

Today we are launching two brand new, dedicated websites for the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow - http://www.stvglasgow.com and http://www.stvedinburgh.com.

Providing compelling, lively and up-to-date content, these city sites will cover what’s happening in Edinburgh and Glasgow right now, focusing on four key editorial areas:

News: all the news and sport of the day, including breaking stories, in-depth reporting plus weather and travel updates.

Going Out: lifestyle content including shopping, going out, culture and entertainment.

Magazine: features, community participation and all the hot local issues.

Find It: Trusted listings featuring a Business Directory and a comprehensive Events service.

As part of the STV Local platform, these sites will offer the opportunity to engage with content on a city-wide level but also for communities within the cities to connect on a more local level.

Visitors are promised immediate access to all of the essential info needed to experience the cities to the full and everything they have to offer.

STV Creative has produced two one-minute on-air commercials to launch the new websites, based on the concept, “Everything around you”, and are seen as a seamless 360 degree view of scenes from each area. You can view the adverts by clicking on the links: Glasgow and Edinburgh, and further information can be found below. The Edinburgh advert features the Dean Gallery, the Meadows, Grange Cricket Club, South Queensferry and Oloroso. The Glasgow advert features Govanhill Baths, Shawfield Race Track, Cowcaddens flats bowling green, and Great Western Road.

STV Local plans to launch additional sites in the coming months, including a city site for Aberdeen.

David Milne, Editor of STV Local, said:

“The evolution of STV Local has led us to the creation of two city sites for Edinburgh and Glasgow, each aspiring to be ‘the voice of the city’. The sites are a natural extension of the Local network and are built around core values, including our passionate belief in community. Our hope is that our Edinburgh and Glasgow sites, with their compelling editorial and video content, will prove essential to those who live and work in these great cities.”

Today singer song-writer Amy Macdonald helped launch the STV Appeal 2012.

Amy also announced that she plans to do five short acoustic gigs in one day in June (‘Amy’s Five A Day for the Kids’), with all proceeds going to the STV Appeal. Amy will start her ‘gigathon’ in Aberdeen in the morning, and will then go on to perform in Dundee, Stirling, Edinburgh and will finish up in Glasgow that evening. Up to 200 tickets will be available for each performance and venues and ticket information will be announced shortly.

Amy visited one of the projects helped by last year’s campaign, Pulse Community Radio in Barrhead, and met some of the young people who volunteer for this youth-focused radio station.

As you know, the STV Appeal was launched in 2011 by The Hunter Foundation and STV, and in its first year raised almost £1.3m. 48 cheque presentations were made funding at least one project in every single local authority area (32) in Scotland.

As in 2011, the STV Appeal will spend 100% of the money raised on the kids who most need it. Every single penny raised stays in Scotland. And as last year, the Scottish Government has once again committed to match funding the total amount raised.

The STV Appeal has a long term aim to change perceptions and attitudes towards poverty and highlight it as the serious reality that is facing our country.

Amy Macdonald said:

“When I heard about the work of the STV Appeal and the shocking statistics around child poverty in Scotland, I was keen to get involved. Scotland is a small nation and the fact that one in four of our children is affected by poverty made me keen to do what ever I could to help make a difference.”

“It’s been a pleasure meeting the team at Pulse Radio today and I hope to meet some of the other charities working with the Appeal. Through speaking with the team, I think it’s important to realise that its not just about raising money but about changing peoples perceptions. I’ll be doing five gigs in one day in June and through this small gesture, I hope we can help raise the profile of what is a pressing and incredibly serious issue, and help change the lives of some of those children affected.

Keep an eye on Connect for more information on Amy’s gigathon!

Animal 999 - new eight part series on STV

Animal 999 - 8pm, Friday 13 April 2012 for eight weeks on STV

In a new, insightful eight-part series, Animal 999 goes behind the scenes of the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Scottish SPCA), to highlight the good work Scotland’s leading animal welfare charity carries out. The organisation opens its doors to allow an access all areas experience to the work of its inspectors and animal rescue officers, who work to protect thousands of domestic, farm and wild animals from harm and danger every year.

The series travels pan-Scotland, rescuing day old baby hedgehogs, and newly hatched blue tits to a pod of whales in danger of being stranded off the coast of Uist in the Outer Hebrides. It even visits a circus to check on the health of its horses and budgerigars, as well as the Royal Highland Show to make sure the livestock are not just “best in breed”, but “healthiest in breed”.

Episode 1 (13 April 2012, 8pm)
Glasgow (Senior Inspectors Nicki Scott and Billy Linton)
Case A - Holly the dog
A landlord reports a dog has been abandoned in his property, but when the inspectors turn up they discover the dog is being well looked after, but needs a new home. The search is on to find Holly a new owner, which may not be an easy task as Holly is 11 years old, and deemed a doggy OAP!

Edinburgh (Animal Rescue Officer Emma Phillips)
Case B - a deer hit by a car
A deer is struck by a car on the busy A90 and a concerned passer-by calls the Scottish SPCA. On arrival it is clear to the animal rescue officer that the spine of the deer has been damaged. How will the officer deal with this all too common problem?

Edinburgh (Animal Rescue Officer Connie O’Neill)
Case C- the duck family
A call comes in to report that a family of ducks has strayed onto land and found themselves stuck in a car park. It takes all the officer’s experience and expertise to catch them without the mother duck flying off and leaving her ducklings behind.

Elizabeth Partyka, Deputy Director of Channels at STV, said: “Animal 999 is an informative new series with exclusive access to the work of the Scottish SPCA. The programme highlights the excellent work they do and demonstrates that Scotland loves animals. However, it also shows that there are many animals that are unloved and neglected in this country, and without the work of the Scottish SPCA our animals would suffer.”

Animal 999 was produced by Scottish independent production company Demus Productions for STV.

The programme is sponsored by Barr Construction.
